While this team started in 2020, Redwood City has been doing equity work since at least 2018 and has invested in developing a fairer community for all for much longer. The City hired its first Equity & Inclusion Officer, Briana Evans, to support this commitment Citywide. That October, City Council updated the strategic plan to include a Foundational Guiding Principle of Equity: Redwood City will put equity first, urging a collective restart so that policies serve the entire community. In 2020, the wake of George Floyd’s death and amid national and local protests against racism, Redwood City initiated a series of steps to reflect on its own work, hear from community members about the city government’s impact, and further improve our services for all. We work with City departments and community partners to set goals, collect and analyze data, adapt practices, and implement change. The program’s name is an expression of our commitment to a fair and safe city full of opportunity for everyone in our community, regardless of identity, background, or income. Our name means Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Leadership in Redwood City. We organize and deepen the City’s efforts to become a fairer, better community for all.
